The Tehachapi Village Market Place building began its life in the 1940's as a potato shed. It had many other uses through
out the years, most recently an antique auction house.
In the spring of 2003 we began the extensive renovation starting with the shell that had been completely stripped of
all interior walls, roofing and all finish materials. All new electrical and plumbing was installed. Sections
of the old concrete block wall were removed (with the approval of the engineer) to allow new windows in the exterior
wall to provide daylighting of the new retail spaces. A portion of the south roof was raised to create a shed dormer
to allow additional windows to be installed which provided a nice entry in to the stores.
At the east end of the building we constructed the "Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory" a well known high end confectioner.
And at the west end we built the "Kohnens Country Bakery" (high quality baked goods produced fresh each day).
The bakery produced some unigue challenges as we were building a modern commercial kitchen within the shell of an
existing old building. The floor being 48" above the level of the parking lot (old packing shed) and the deck with railing
surrounding three side of the building. The 4500 pound walkin oven was forked over the deck with a reach lift (one half at
a time), then hoisted upright once in the building and joined together.
